El Pollo Loco expands its menu this weekend to include four new items containing grilled steak.
In a press release, El Pollo Loco CEO Steve Carley implies that the chain’s steak will borrow its recipe from the chicken with which it now shares a home, describing his sirloin strips as “deeply marinated in a signature blend of citrus, garlic, herbs and spices.” In fact, each of the new products appears to have a direct, chicken counterpart — most notably, the marquee Grillmaster Steak Taco and Sirloin Steak Bowl, which look like carne asada versions of the Chicken Soft Taco and the Ultimate Pollo Bowl, respectively.
Relaying facts from the aforementioned release, QSR Magazine confirms that the Mexican fast food restaurant will generate buzz for the entrées by launching two, nationwide television advertising campaigns and a high-profile promotional event taking place at an El Pollo Loco in the heart of Hollywood. Elsewhere, Nation’s Restaurant News notes that the chain attempted to incorporate steak into its menu nearly twenty years ago, but quickly abandoned the concept. The company has aligned this second try with its upcoming 30th anniversary.
The Sirloin Steak Bowl, Steak & 3-Cheese Quesadilla, and Grillmaster Steak Taco (with its smaller corn-tortilla sibling) arrive at all El Pollo Loco locations on January 9.
